While we still can’t see a time when running races will be able to go ahead, the number of available virtual running events has exploded. And they’re not just the simple format of old – pick a distance, run it, send some proof and get a cool medal. Now the challenges are getting more challenging. And fun too! There really is something for everyone to run in July 2020.
This month we round up the best virtual events taking place (or starting) this month.
White Star Running Lockdown Frolic
Just look at that medal! How amazing is this wooden creation? And it could be yours, or one of four other animal designs, by taking part in the unique Lockdown Frolic. To earn it, you just need to run (or walk) as much as you like in a 12-hour period on Saturday 25th July 2020 from 8am to 8pm. As an added twist, there will be a treasure hunt, where you need to find and photograph various items – which will only be unveiled at 7am on the day. A great event for the whole family to get involved in.
Virtual Race to the Stones
Race to the Stones is probably one of the best-known and most-popular ultra running events in the calendar. As it’s cancelled this year, a virtual version has been introduced. Sign up to run either the half-marathon, marathon or 100K distance over a week, from Monday 6th July – so you’ll have to be quick as it’s about to start! Can you manage 62 miles in a week? Or a marathon? It’s free to sign up, but you can add on an optional t-shirt and/or medal if you like.
Phoenix Running P7in7
Can you run every day for 7 days? If so, this is the challenge for you. Starting on Monday 27th July, you need to run any distance (at least 1 mile) every day for 7 days. You can set yourself any personal challenge you like – 5K a day? A marathon a day? Whatever suits you!
End To End Run Virtual LEJOG
Ever fancied running from Land’s End to John O’ Groats? Well, now you can. Virtually at least. And you have a year to do it! This virtual challenge lets you log your running and walking miles, which move you up a map from point to point. The 874-mile journey is definitely more of a marathon than a sprint. You get sent virtual postcards at various mileage milestones to keep you motivated. There is a friendly and motivating Facebook Group too, which is full of people doing various challenges.
RunThrough Virtual Monthly Mileage
The concept for this is simple – pick a monthly mileage target to suit you and get running! Options are 50 miles, 100 miles, 150 miles and 200 miles. If you complete your mileage within 30 days of whenever you enter (you don’t have to start on the 1st of a month), you get your medal. They will also send a motivational postcard and some post-run goodies.
Virtual ASICS London 10K
The ASICS London 10K is a popular road race, especially for those looking ti get a new PB for the distance. This year it has gone virtual. Simply run a 10K in your own time, upload your evidence and you’ll get a digital goodie bag. There are prizes for age category winners too. If you wish, you can upgrade your entry for £10 and you get a limited-edition engraved NOTCH bracelet too!
