5 Key Items for Spring Running

Finally, after a long wet winter, the weather has started to warm up here in the UK. We’ve even had some early summer temperatures recently, so now it’s time to rethink our running wardrobe.

With typical UK spring weather, we’ll still have a few chilly days yet, so we have to be prepared for all eventualities. Here are my top five items to move from winter in to spring/summer running.

1. Super socks

With the temperatures hotting up, a good pair of socks is a must to help keep your feet dry, comfortable and blister free.

My favourite socks are the mid-weight Injinji socks that I discovered  a couple of years ago. The first time I wore them they felt really weird and I wasn’t sure, but gave them another go.

Now I love them and I find them super comfortable. I do think they protect your toes against blisters, especially when the temperatures increase. Give them a go and you will become a fan of them too. The price of Injinji socks are on par with other makes of socks and they do last – mine are still going strong two years on.

2. Technical t-shirt

The spring weather calls for a decent running t-shirt. A well-fitting, super-comfortable, wicking t-shirt that also washes well. We all have plenty of finisher’s race t-shirts, but often they’re cheaply made, cheap in feel and not that comfortable.

My favourite Ashmei t-shirt

I feel it’s worth shopping around to find your perfect running t-shirt, as you’ll have it for a few years. My cherished t-shirt is an old one: my merino zip neck from Ashmei. The merino is really soft, it’s wicking and it keeps you warm and cool depending on the temperature.

The zip neck is useful for temperature regulation, which is good on those chilly spring mornings. Then, when the temperatures rises, the material has sun protection of UPF 50+. I also have a vest version of the t-shirt too.

3. Simple sleeveless t-shirt

For those hot spring days, a running vest top is needed to keep you cool. Just like with a running t-shirt, you need to find the right one for you. It should have superb breathability properties, should wick the sweat away and have UPF protection.

Bamboo Clothing vest top for warmer days

For me, I like my vest top to be soft and be cut low under the arm pits. My new choice is the vest top I bought in the sale from Bamboo Clothing, as it’s so soft next to the skin. Bamboo is a great material, as it’s breathable, helps to keep your body at an even temperature and has UPF/SPF.

My exact top is unavailable, but this one is similar.

4. Cool cap

We do need to protect our eyes from the sunlight, keep the sun off our face and keep our head cool. A running cap is perfect for this, plus it stops the sweat dripping down in to our eyes.

Protect your face and head with a cap

My running cap is from Patagonia, and I love it as it is all material. It has a soft peak and most of it is made from comfy mesh, which makes it really breathable. With only a small plastic clasp at the back, it means I can throw it into the washing machine after every run. As I only have one cap, I do need to invest in a few more to see me through the summer months.

5. Awesome arm sleeves

On some spring mornings the temperature can be on the cool side for the first few miles on your run. I find that my arm sleeves are perfect item to keep my arms warm until I warm up or the temperature increases. I wear them with a sleeveless t shirt and once I’m warm, I can roll them down. The bonus is then you have something to wipe the sweat from your face.

5.1 Sun lotion

I know this is an extra item, but I’m classing it as must-have for any runner. With no more long sleeves on our runs, we need to protect our skin with a sun lotion.

Don’t forget the sun lotion!

My one of choice is from Green People and its scent-free sun lotion SPF 30, which is also perfect for my sensitive skin. The lotion is water repellent, non pore clogging, is ocean friendly, with plant-based packaging.
